Funny animal blank card with a black and white photograph of a male southern Elephant Seal and a Tussac Bird.
We're not sure if these are 2 friends having a chat on the beach or whether the bird is about to annoy the elephant seal! Seeing as male Southern Elephant Seals can weigh in at a massive 3,000kg though we wouldn't like to annoy one!
Elephant seals are so named after the large nose - or proboscis - that the male of the species has. This is used to make loud roaring noises, especially during the mating season. The female seal is a lot smaller than the male, weighing in at a mere 300-900kg just prior to giving birth. Pups on average weigh 40kg when born. They are cumbersome and awkward on land but in the water are excellent divers and swimmers. They have been recorded by biologists swimming up to 2km deep and holding their breath for up to 2 hours!
