Technically Big Ben is the name given to the big bell which is housed in the clock tower - Elizabeth Tower - and the bell weighs in at a staggering 13,670kg!! In 1834 the Palace of Westminster was destroyed by fire. In 1844 the decision was made that the new Houses of Parliment should include a clock tower. Elizabth Tower, as it is known now, stands at over 96 metres tall.
